Topic description: Misinformation is a pervasive societal challenge with far-reaching consequences. Some of its most concerning impacts include foreign interference in democratic elections, the undermining of public health initiatives, and growing distrust in science. These alarming outcomes are driven by people coming to believe that misinformation is true. Understanding how information comes to be perceived as true is crucial, and this issue has been extensively studied in experimental psychology. This talk will explore key principles of the human mind that shape our judgments of truth and make us vulnerable to misinformation.
Speaker bio: Bruce Milliken completed his doctoral degree at the University of Waterloo, before coming to McMaster University to pursue postdoctoral studies in 1992. He was hired as an Assistant Professor at McMaster in 2005 and has held the position of Professor in the Department of Psychology, Neuroscience and Behaviour since 2006. His teaching and research interests center on human cognition, with a particular focus on human memory and attention.
