Openings come up throughout the year. While all potential team members should be interested in neurobiological questions at some level, opportunities exist for trainees from a wide range of backgrounds.

If you have a strong background in computer science, engineering, math, or physics and you are attracted to challenging questions, contact us to find out why research into the developing nervous system is arguably the ultimate question in complex systems!

Undergraduate Students

Interested students should read the Undergrad Info page and then contact the Principal Investigator at least 2 months before their proposed start date.

Graduate Students

Depending on their background and motivation, students may choose from a wide range of approaches within systems and cellular neuroscience, including everything from in vitro or in vivo electrophysiology and cell imaging or computational approaches, to neuroanatomical techniques and basic protein assays. Students should have good quantitative skills, with preparation in the biological and/or physical sciences, or engineering. Candidates must be accepted by one of the graduate programs (below) with which the laboratory is affiliated. If you are interested in joining the lab, please send an email to dgillespie at mcmaster.ca that includes:

  1. a brief description of your research background and scientific interests
  2. a brief explanation of what you want to get out of grad school and what you hope to do afterward
  3. an academic transcript (unofficial okay)

Affiliated Graduate Programs

Postdoctoral Fellows

Expertise in electrophysiology, biophysics, or biophotonics is preferred; an interest in fundamental neuroscience questions is required. Candidates should send an email to dgillespie at mcmaster.ca with:

  1. a CV
  2. a brief description of research background and interests
  3. contact information for at least 2 references
